Our History

The African Roots and Heritage Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization recognized by the US. Federal Government and three states, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. It was established in 2006 by Professor Anita M. Diop and Edith Cooper. We began as the Black Cultural Festival and found that name to be problematic for African Immigrants, for which we wanted and needed their participation. Therefore, we launched a community contest to find a name that would best represent those born in America and those who migrated to America. Our resolve is the African Roots and Heritage Foundation, a name that describes all Africans no matter the date or condition in which they arrived in America.

The Greater Columbus Metro Area is rich with a diversity emanating from the African American and African Cultures. The African American historically came to Ohio during slavery as runaway slaves. The formerly enslaved men and women escaped to the North and planted roots right here in Columbus OH; risking everything to find and make a new life for themselves and their family. After the enslaved Africans were freed, African Americans migrated to the North, from the South, particularly during the 1940s to find work and a new life. Even later, there began an International Migration from many ports in Africa. These new immigrants have come to the United States of America to pursue work and new lives for themselves and their families. This is the tie that binds us. No matter the date of arrival, all Africans and African descendants share the same ideals on work, education, healthcare, and family. You can reach us at +16143908864 to find out more about us.
